What is the Hierarchy of Tasks?
Hierarchy is the order in which the tasks are created in any Project Management for task management & time management purposes.
For any project, the tasks need to be created only in the following Hierarchy.
- Milestone
- Heading
- Work
- Task
The above is also called the types of tasks and they only appear in a pick list of the field Type.
Definition of the types of Tasks :
- Milestone – The whole project to be accomplished is called a Milestone to be achieved. A Milestone is split into different headings.
- Heading – The headings are subsets created under a milestone. Heading can be created only if the Milestone is approved.
- Work – Group of works come under one heading. The Work is the actual tangible output or called the Deliverable in any project Management.
- Task – Each work is split into one or more tasks. The tasks are smaller portions of the work and are assigned one or more assignees.
Purposes of the different types of tasks:
- Milestone & headings are broader topics used for discussion in PMOs and the timelines of Project completion are fixed based on their completion date.
- Works & tasks are used for daily tracking & progress reporting purposes in Project management
- Work has a maximum duration of a day or two to get completed & delivered.
- Task has to be completed within a day so that the work progresses or gets partially completed.
Rules for creation:
A milestone is created and only on approval of Milestone, Headings can be created.
Similarly only on approval of a heading works can be created under that heading and only on approval works tasks can be created under that work.
